Error code: 1603 (0x643) – SharePoint 2013 virtual machine

As you know I own DELL 6430 which is really powerful machine. With old laptop I have to use external SSD disk to put there my Virtual machines, which has been virtualized with VMware workstation, to avoid performance issues with my SharePoint virtual machines.  Now I try to run my SharePoint virtual machine on the same hard drive as system. It could be best solution as there’s no need to carry additional external drive. Let’s see.

Unfortunately I don’t have WMware license for new laptop, so I have to use Hyper-V. Thanks thanks to my  BizSpark membership I can use Windows 8.1, which give us hypervisor for free.

BTW. I have write a post why you should spend some money to use VMware workstation instead of Hyper-V. When you compare both you will see why VMware is mature product and Microsoft must learn a few things…

Anyway I’ve decided to create my SharePoint 2013 virtual machine with Windows 2012 as main system. And everything was running well: system installation, AD, SQL server, etc. But when time has come and I’ve stared SharePoint 2013 installation I always get an error message at the end of installation process: “SharePoint Server 2013 encountered an error during setup”. In the installation log I found an entry:

“Failed to install the product: c:globaloserver.msi error code: 1603(0x643) error when installing SharePoint 2013”. There’s no too many solutions of the problem. One of the most popular is to edit msi file, you can find details here. From my point of view it’s not a solution.

I’ve tried many solutions, but in my cases the best was the simplest. I didn’t install ANY UPDATES with Windows update and in your virtual machine use just ONE virtual processor!  I mean that I just install system, SQL Server 2012 with integrated service pack 1 and SharePoint Prerequisites. And that’s all!. After that SharePoint has been installed without any problems, just like workflow manager. After complete configuration I’ve run Windows update and installed all patches, but everything is running well. And also I’ve added more processors.  And I have no idea what’s the problem 🙂 .

The course prepares to Microsoft exam 70-488: Developing Microsoft SharePoint Server 2013 Core Solutions. The course has been prepared by persons known in SharePoint community: Chris Johnson and Christopher Harrison. Interesting thing is that for each module you have to answer to a few questions to pass module, which is something new in MVA, you can’t just click on video links or presentations. Latitude E6540 and Windows 8

My company blessed me with newest Dell Latitude E6540. Laptop was perfect to me as it has great stuffs inside, which is imported as I created many SharePoint solution, when hardware performance is crucial. What a surprise when I tried to install new Windows 8.1 . I’ve discovered that for the newest model of Dell laptop there’s no drivers. There’s no even for Windows 8. But there’re for Ubuntu system : ) image

Is that a joke ? I’ve tried install it base on drivers provided by Microsoft. But almost every time I’ve started the system it was crashing for the first time, but he second was successful. Also some devices weren’t recognized properly and some drivers used by Windows were very old. In the effect I have to turn back and install Windows 7.

I always was thinking that Dell and Microsoft are very close to each other, and so obvious thing like driver to new system shouldn’t be a problem, as this version of Windows is so important to Microsoft. And other hand we hear so many things about Dell problems. Well, that’s not help them to much…

By the way. I’ve check Lenovo site for the latest laptops and Windows 8.1 and drivers are in place….

I just get information, that Windows 8.1 is ready to download from my BizSpark account. Well, it seems that people were really angry as the message was clear, no access before official launch. Ok, lets’ try it again….

Implementation of eventDrivenActivity1 in state workflow

Currently I make a lot of SharePoint projects and in one case a I faced very interesting problem. One of the project requirement was to delay workflow for specific amount of time, so for me it was obvious to use Delay activity. In fact for some states I needed three of them. Piece of cake, but when I compiled the project I get strange error:

“Only the first child activity of ‘EventDrivenActivity’ ‘eventDrivenActivity1’ can implement the ‘System.Workflow.Activities.IEventActivity’ interface”

What’s going on? There’re a lot code and activities, so it was difficult to find out what’s the source of problem. Finally I disabled Delay activates and it works. So what’s the problem. On the network problem is solved in different way, but the main explanation can be found at MSDN. You don’t  choice and you have to make some work around.l I have to switch to sequential workflow.

By the way the new workflow platform allow to make such implementation… I have to check it Uśmiech

Apple iPad 128 GB vs. Microsoft Surface Pro

Yesterday I was a part of discussion at Techcrunch about upcoming premier of Microsoft Surface Pro. I would like to write something more according to this as the subject is very important to me and I think also for other Microsoft fans. My statement was simple.  Microsoft wasn’t prepared to launch such product and simple example is that there’s no official Twitter of Facebook app. As you can see at Techcrunch many people said that there’re others solutions/app. That’s right. But still in my opinion missing Twitter client is something desperate for me… Twitter or Facebook are “must have” apps. Also I was wondering what’s the main goal for Microsoft in case of Surface? I am not sure, I also think that MS also doesn’t know… Simple question. What’s Surface? Is it a tablet? Or maybe ultrabook? I think that mix of Metro and desktop was stupid idea. If I want tablet I need application which works perfect with fingers – that’s the Twitter case. But If you want laptop you need desktop application, without any Metro screens. For me fact that I have to go always trough Metro to my desktop apps it’s stupid. Why I don’t have a choice??? I always heard that if something is dedicated to too many things in fact it’s not good for anything. I think that Microsoft is shooting at two birds, but they missed both… First bird it’s tablet. They need something what could be replacement for iPad, something with application store. And the second bird is desktop. Huge money comes to Microsoft from desktop market: Windows, Office, Internet Explored, games, thousands of desktop application. They can’t just cut off the rope. But It seems that they missed both target in fact. I think that in next few months we’ll hear that Microsoft made some wrong choices, they were listing to the clients and they will got other way… It’s sad to me that Microsoft lost their vision. They are scared that they lose huge mobile market and try so hard to get their share, but in the result it’s pathetic. They use power of Marketing (they have very good one…) to sell a product. But they don’t care about clients or IT guys who spend money/time for their product after a few months. They just abandon them. For example. How they can sold Windows Phone 7.5 a few weeks before new system (Windows 8) without possibility to upgrade? Why just forgot about developers/companies which make investments in SilverLight or XNA?

I am really big fan of Microsoft, but I think they lost their vision. Without changes at the top of company – Why Steve Ballmer is still SEO of MS? – Microsoft will lost the ground year by year without fresh blood. And money is not everything…

BizSpark

I mentioned a few times before about a program known as BizSpark. Now it’s time to write something more about it, as it’s worth it. BizSpark is program developed by Microsoft, for companies existing for less  than 5 years and their turnover is less than 100 000 $. Duration of partnership is 3 years. Registration  process is simple. We register with our LiveID at BizSpark site and then we fill some information about our company. After few days we should get response from Microsoft about our BizSpark membership. Ok, so what we get in fact? First of all we get full access to MSDN! Anyone who knows a little about Microsoft programming that’s BIG thing. Let me say that you get Visual Studio 2012 ultimate edition… And it’s for free and you can use it to earn money.  Also we get possibility to register for free developer account for Windows Store and Windows Phone. Nothing special but still it’s for free. Why you can try and maybe you will create new Angry Birds for Windows Phone? There’s nothing to lose and we can do a lot of things for 3 years. Especially than Windows Phone is in my opinion very good mobile system and you should know something about it. Soon I will get new Nokia Lumia 820 so I can try it by my own. Well, I’m missing the point…

As BizSpark member we get also access to Azure with resource limitation, but it’s enough to learn it. Also we will get some offer from program partners, with 3 month offer from PluralSight . So let’s assume. Is worth to access? Totally! I’m not sure why Microsoft is not present more information about BizSpark, but If you run small company you should try it.

Why Microsoft make me angry?

I always been big fan of Microsoft products. Really. I own certificates, I like their products, but for last few months they do everything to kill my love J. I am SharePoint big fan and I’m good at it, but all my knowledge will be useless with new version . With SharePoint 2010 I learned Silverlight, but it seems that version 5.0 was the last one, and MS drop it, but there’s no clear statement about that! But all people know and talk about it, even MVP’s! Also I learn WPF, but when I read about Windows 8 it looks that this technology also will be dead soon. I plan to use Thread Management Gateway (TMG) in my company, as it’s very good product, with very good price and quality, but we just get new information that Microsoft will not sell anymore this product. What’s hell is going on with them!!!??? My problem with Microsoft increase, I can’t understand where they are going to… Except that they want to get more money. It’s not just their decision. It also has an impact to my life. If you want to learn something new, you have to spent a few months and in case changes you’ll lose this time. And much more people start to think that Microsoft is wasting their time! All is just marketing, without any plan or destination. People are tired with this. I am not big Apple fan, but if you learned something you 3 years ago, you can use it with latest version of iOS.

Windows Live Messenger – end of history?

Yesterday, I’ve discovered new post at  Skype blog,  that Skype will replace Windows Live Messenger soon. When Microsoft bought Skype many of us was thinking: why? They paid to much for the product which they already poses  – Windows Live Messenger. It seems that the story will be finished now. According to the blog information in near feature Microsoft will integrate Windows Live Messenger into Skype and It will become main communication platform for Windows environment. From my point of view it’s end of some IT story, as Windows Live Messenger was a part of Windows systems for so long and it difficult to imagine Windows installation without it…   Of course on other hand I will need only one solution to be in touch with friends or customers, instead two just like now. I just hope that Microsoft will add some missing features to Skype, before Windows Live Messenger will be retired.
